Nena and I still rent...a cute little beach bungalow of a house about a mile from the Long Island Sound. As such, we have fought the desire to beautify the outside too much...usually sticking with some flowers in the front and cleaning up all the leaves in the spring.
But this year, we're trying our hands at a small garden. Our soil is less than ideal (it's basically sand with some rocky fill dumped on top of it), so we're keeping it small and not going overboard. But, I planted it Sunday morning with:
- 8 tomato plants
- 4 bell pepper plants
- 4 summer squash plants
- 4 cuccumber plants
- A small bet of mixed greens
- Herbs including basil, lemon basil, rosemary, flat-leaf parsley, cilantro and chives
We'll see how it goes...but it will be fun regardless.

Good luck with the garden. Just something to look forward to: the basil and rosemary won't survive the winter (unless you do something extraordinary that I don't know about), but the parsley, cilantro, and chives will do very well. But you'll probably have to wait until next summer to get much return on them.
