We've been talking a lot about how to run a successful wine business, and this is a popular model. It's one that seems effective: Crank out the sweeter wines that pay the bills so you can follow your goals of high-end vinifera. Nice to see it happening.

i really hope he succeeds with his plans. people like him are very good models of perseverance because they love what they do and are not afraid of taking risks.

Great post, Bryan! Martin is one of my favorite, and one of the most respected, personalities in Niagara and you really captured him well as a vigneron and as a person.

I encourage those visiting the Niagara wine country to check out Schulze; since Martin doesn't take vacations, you're likely to meet him - but you'll have to keep up! I lived next door to the winery at one point and have fond memories of waking up at 6 am to run, and waving to him knowing that he'd already been up and productive for hours.


I really didn't understand the potential of the sweet wine model in the area when I moved here. I only hope they can move to separate the brands and avoid being known as a sweet winery.

Martin is the hardest working person I know. He's extremely meticulous and a blast to hang around.

I think any model works as long as the wine is well made and marketed effectively. We focus on dry wines at Arrowhead and have seen similar growth.
